Capital B is a first-of-its-kind local and national nonprofit news organization reporting for Black communities across the country. We have local newsrooms in Atlanta and Gary, Ind. as well as a national newsroom. Cofounded by CEO Lauren Williams (former senior vice president and editor-in-chief of Vox) and Chief Audience Officer Akoto Ofori-Atta (former managing editor of The Trace), Capital B is looking for a skilled, highly motivated development director to help us grow our major gift operation.

Capital B is committed to serving Black communities essential local reporting and in-depth national coverage from a fresh perspective. By filling the gaps left by mainstream news, we're empowering our audience with civic journalism and authentic storytelling that centers Black voices and experiences. Our development team’s work allows us to pursue ambitious, essential journalism for Black communities, expand into new communities that lack robust local news, and helps us build a sustainable business for the future.

The development director will be responsible for owning the portfolio and life cycle of major gifts to Capital B. They will be in charge of cultivating and developing relationships with existing and prospective donors throughout the United States, and in key regions where Capital B has local newsrooms. This includes everything from researching and prospecting to stewarding existing relationships. The ideal candidate thrives in an entrepreneurial environment, is highly organized and communicative, results-driven, and experienced in development work focused on major donors. This is a unique and exciting opportunity for someone who is energized by our work and mission to build a portfolio and lead a crucial revenue stream for our growing organization at an exciting time. The development director will have ample opportunity to develop ideas and utilize their creativity to build a community of donors who share Capital B’s values.

This position reports to the Chief Revenue Officer and will work collaboratively with the rest of the development team, executive team, and board members to help achieve our overall revenue goals. Travel is required.

Salary: $100,000-$115,000

Location: Remote

Responsibilities:

  • Build and manage a portfolio of 90-120 prospective donors who have the potential for gifts of $25K+ and have philanthropic goals and interests that align with Capital B’s work and mission.
  • Execute moves management process for existing and prospective donors to achieve annual major gift goals.
  • Lead the full philanthropic cycle including: identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitations, and stewardship, including the development of new materials and strategies as needed.
  • Coordinate solicitations and engagement between donors, Capital B executives and Capital B affiliates.
  • Engage additional Capital B staff and associates (including board members) to participate in major giving as appropriate.
  • Prepare and facilitate planned gift proposals and agreements with outside advisors
  • Manage stewardship of donors in collaboration with the development team and broader Capital B personnel, helping to promote a culture of philanthropy.
  • Propose and execute on donor engagement and cultivation events throughout the course of the year.
  • Lead creation of Capital B major gifts program

What You’ll Bring:

  • 5+ years of experience in individual giving and major gifts.
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to write and edit compelling donor communications and to appropriately represent Capital B in compelling in-person pitches.
  • Strong analytical skills and experience with prospect research.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact with donors, staff, board members and others.
  • Experience with journalism organizations preferred not required
