Cofounded by CEO Lauren Williams (former senior vice president and editor-in-chief of Vox) and Chief Audience Officer Akoto Ofori-Atta (former managing editor of The Trace), Capital B is a first-of-its-kind local and national nonprofit news organization reporting for Black communities across the country. We have local newsrooms in Atlanta and Gary, Indiana, as well as a national news team.

Capital B is dedicated to ensuring Black audiences receive vital and trustworthy news and information in a rapidly changing media landscape, and the Director of Audience Growth and Innovation will play a crucial role in making that happen. We’re seeking an energetic leader to take charge of our analytics and use data to drive a variety of small and large-scale experiments, from enhancing story promotion to developing new products, all aimed at growing our audience.

The person in this role will manage existing relationships with tech and social platforms, seek new opportunities for growth-related partnerships, and lead efforts to incorporate new technologies into our audience-building strategies, while setting clear boundaries for their use. Driven by a passion for Black stories, the Director will work with urgency to keep Capital B ahead of evolving audience habits, while fostering a culture of creativity and innovation within the newsroom.

This position reports to the Chief Audience Officer.

Salary: $140,000-$145,000

Location: Remote

Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team, one deputy director and two producers, to drive Capital B’s organic audience growth
  • Stay ahead of shifting audience needs and habits by establishing a teamwide system for testing audience growth strategies and tactics
  • Manage the collection, analysis, and distribution of our audience data, ensuring Capital B stakeholders are always up to date on our audience growth
  • Work with a cross-functional team to identify and lead AI experiments aimed at boosting audience growth
  • Identify and oversee partnerships with tech and social platforms and trusted Black voices
  • Create republishing standards for sharing our work across the web
  • Collaborate closely with local leadership to develop and implement innovative strategies for audience growth in Atlanta and Gary, Indiana
