Capital B is a first-of-its-kind local and national nonprofit news organization reporting for Black communities across the country. Cofounded by CEO Lauren Williams (former senior vice president and editor-in-chief of Vox) and Chief Audience Officer Akoto Ofori-Atta (former managing editor of The Trace), Capital B is looking for a development director to help build Capital B’s national and local fundraising pipelines to secure funding.

Capital B’s development director will have the awesome opportunity to work with the senior director of development in a start-up environment to build local and national philanthropic support for our coverage of issues critical to Black communities across the country. The ideal candidate for this role will relish in researching, identifying, and building relationships with individuals and foundations that have the capacity to support Capital B’s national and local ambitions as well as passions that align with Capital B’s editorial values.

This position reports to the senior director of development.

Salary: $90,000+, based on experience

Location: Remote


  • Identify, cultivate, and solicit a portfolio of 20-40 major donors & foundation prospects to support the Atlanta newsroom
  • Work with senior director of development to identify and cultivate major donors to support the national newsroom, central operation, and future local newsrooms
  • Regular reporting against goals and gap
  • Lead Salesforce administration
  • Development-related event planning
  • Grant and gift proposal writing
  • Some prospect research

What you’ll bring:

  • A deep belief in the mission of Capital B, as well as an interest in Black media and serving Black news consumers
  • 3+ years of experience securing six-figure gifts preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to create successful cultivation and stewardship strategies that lead to long-term donor relationships
  • Familiarity with journalism and/or equity work
  • A builder mentality, including a willingness to contribute to all aspects of the development process as Capital B grows its development program
  • A natural problem solver
  • Ability to work independently, but with strong communication instincts
  • Persuasive written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills, with the ability to effectively interact with a wide range of individuals
  • Ability to travel for meetings as needed

  • Funder connections are not required, but are nice to have
